Thermoplastic Elastomer-TPE Plastic Sheets

  • A combination of Rubber with Polypropylene
  • 100% vulcanized - Rubber molecules are permanently bonded with Polypropylene molecules, turning two different materials into a new product with characteristics that are superior to either of its ingredients. While other resin manufacturers simply mix Rubber and Polypropylene, the resin used to make our TPE is manufactured with a patented process that results in 100% vulcanization.
  • Why is this 100% vulcanization process important?
    • Longer life expectancy of finished products that are subjected to cyclic stresses. This benefit can result in longer- lasting AFO’s.
    • Finished parts that are far more resistant to stress cracking under constant load.
  • Because of the rubber content, TPE is more heat resistant and that requires that it be heated at a higher temperature than Polypropylene for thermoforming. After forming, uniform cooling is required to minimize warpage and distortion.
  • TPE provides
    • More flexibility than Polypropylene or Co-Polymer, but more rigidity than Low Density Polyethylene
    • An outstanding material for foot orthotics such as UCB’s
    • Good impact strength in temperatures as low as –40°F
    • Draw/stretch ratios of 3:1 with good wall thickness distribution throughout the part
  • Recommended Oven Temperature - 390° to 410° Fahrenheit
IMPORTANT: TPE is hygroscopic, meaning it will absorb moisture from the air. As a result, marred surfaces on formed parts can be experienced unless proper storage techniques are used. The sheets should be stored in a cool, dry area in a polyethylene bag or with polyethylene masking intact. Material that has been subjected to high humidity or left in storage for an extended period of time should be pre-dried. Pre-drying is accomplished by heating the sheet in an oven for 3 to 4 hours at 150°F. Marring (pits) on the surface of formed parts is a clear indication that the material needs to be pre-dried. (Hint: Some of our customers store their TPE on top of their oven so that the heat from the oven keeps it pre-dried and ready for use.)
